Santa Clause

I came home from school one day very excited. I just made my Mom a card for Christmas in Kindergarten and I needed to find a good hiding spot, so my Mom wouldn’t see. “Hey Brian” I asked my older brother, “do you know of any good hiding spots? I made this card for Mom and I want to hide it”.

“The closet is always a good spot” he replied.
“No, she’ll find it there” I added
“How about the attic? No one goes there”. I trusted my brother, so I carried on and went to hide my Mom’s card up in the attic. When I got up there, right in front of my eyes I saw a huge stack of wrapped presents. My first reaction was that my brother was hiding the presents he got for Mom and Dad up there too. But there were too many for Mom and Dad to receive plus my brother was only in the third grade, he didn’t have the money to buy all those gifts. My curiosity drove myself to explore some more. On the wrapping paper it read “To Jack From Santa, To Brian From Santa, To Paul From Santa”. Although I’m only in kindergarten, it doesn’t take a genius to realize what this meant. I began to cry. I heard footsteps; someone was approaching. I didn’t look up, but I just knew that it had to me my Mom.

Six years old is too young to realize that Santa isn’t real…christmas' are never the same anymore. That year chirstmas was nothing like it was before, presents, food, and family but it still wasn't the most jolly time of the year.

  1. A sad story...

You do a nice job of capturing the power of this boy's discovery. It's a little unclear who is narrating this story. How old is the boy now, when he's telling this story? He seems to have some perspective, but he also still seems bitter or disappointed about what happened. Next time, see if you can work on being clearer about who the narrator is.

My favorite part: the details of the gifts that he finds. When you use specific, concrete details, your writing is quite good.

  2. Good job telling this story. Even though I am Jewish and I never actually believed that santa was real, I can feel your pain from the story.
